Although Small In Stature, “The Shoe” Was Larger Than Life

Travers Never Fails To Fire
The Travers confrontation that racing fans had clamored for since the Belmont Stakes was made official never came to fruition. But, at the end of the day, literally, it didn't matter. Top class racehorses and full fields of classy, competitive thoroughbreds can render marquee matchups moot. It was Travers Day, and the Mid-Summer Derby never fails to fire.

Bond Between Man and Thoroughbred Timeless
At 11:27 on the morning Funny Cide Day was celebrated, the Weather Channel indicated 86 degrees and sunny. But outside the press box windows, the rains came. Heat Still On NYRA As Saratoga Hits Halfway Mark
We're at the half-way mark of the storied session and, Travers festivities notwithstanding, you would have to think that the people in charge here would like to pack up and get out of Dodge. And suddenly a meeting to end all meetings takes on a whole new meaning.

Favorites Good for Percentages, Bad for Pocketbook
The graded stakes horses stabled here have been putting on a great show. As usual. Dubuts of the juveniles Birdstone and Value Plus were something to behold. But, on balance, the first two weeks of this session have been furlongs from the nirvana horseplayers have come to expect.

Racing At Crossroads As Saratoga Opens
The opening of this storied place is always greatly anticipated, but no more so than this year, for obvious reasons. The movie, the New York-bred, the recent State Attorney General's report, have all combined to make this meeting one of the most highly anticipated in recent years.

Time Has Come To Alter Triple Crown
Some will say that since thoroughbred racing is finally receiving a larger, worthy share of print and electronic coverage due to one of the most compellingly successful Triple Crown series in modern history that this would not be the best time to alter a good thing by fooling with tradition. Additionally, the bump that racing is sure to receive with the movie release "Seabiscuit" and the continuing saga of classicists Funny Cide and Empire Maker in the Travers Stakes a month later is another reason for racing to maintain the status quo. Actually, nothing would be farther from the truth.
